What is It?

Regarded as one of the worst types of acne, fortunately this is a condition that is quite rare and will not affect most acne sufferers. Severe cystic acne manifests itself as large swollen red pustules in the form of cysts which can be seen on the surface of the skin. Not only are these cysts very unpleasant in appearance they are also very painful and tender to the touch. Though very rare, in certain cases a cystic acne sufferer can go on to develop a severe toxic infection that requires hospital treatment.

Cystic acne affects deeper skin tissue than the more superficial inflammation caused by common acne. Although it is believed that the causes of severe cystic acne are similar to those that cause common acne it has proved difficult to determine why people then go on to develop cysts.

Psychological Impact

One of the major concerns of severe cystic acne are the psychological and social impact it can have on sufferers. This is especially true when you consider that many sufferers are adolescents and this is a time when they are developing their personalities and physical appearance is of great importance to them.

Sufferers can develop low self esteem and a poor body image. Some will grow their hair long to cover the acne, others may not be able to maintain eye contact with other people. Girls will sometimes wear lots of make up to help disguise the acne even though this can of course help to aggravate the condition.

Severe cystic acne, especially when it affects the face can lead to social withdrawal and an inability to develop relationships. This can be especially hard on teenagers at a time when they are learning to form relationships with others. The major concern can be a negative reaction from their peers and in extreme cases they can develop a social phobia.

All of this can eventually lead the sufferer to depression. This can manifest itself as lethargy, loss of appetite, reclusive behaviour and feelings of unworthiness. In the more extreme cases this can even lead to attempts at suicide. Regardless of the cause, depression should be recognised and treated as soon as possible. Any severe cystic acne sufferer who feels they may be depressed should contact their doctor for advice.

Treatments

When looking to treat severe cystic acne you are probably going to need the services of a medical professional. The time for over the counter topical creams and gels is probably past and you will need more powerful treatments. Also, if not treated properly, cystic acne can lead to scarred tissue which can leave marks on your skin long after the original outbreak has gone.  Having said this, severe cystic acne treatment need not be complicated or daunting.

Your doctor or health care practitioner will probably prescribe a course of antibiotics, these have been a mainstay of acne therapy for many years. These will work to reduce the bacterial infection and so over time help to alleviate the condition. You may also be given anti-inflammatories, these will help to reduce the redness and swelling that come with severe cystic acne. Along with these treatments your doctor will also have other options, so we recommend you seek professional help as soon as possible.
